Showcasing Philippine indigenous knowledge and tradition through practice, the Katutubo Desk of the Ateneo Human Rights Center concluded its Alternative Classroom Program (ACP) entitled Katha(ng) Isip last October 12, at the Institute of Social Order, Ateneo De Manila University, Quezon City.

The event is a component of this year’s Indigenous Peoples Month celebration with the theme “Buhay na Dunong: Pagkamalikhain at Kalikasan”. More than 30 law school students participated in the morning program with fun games and exciting activities. The Katutubo Desk partnered with the Save Our Schools (SOS) Network, a network of child-focused NGOs and groups advancing indigenous children’s right to education, to discuss the situation of the Lumad youth and teach the students the basics of bead craft making.

Katkat Dalon, a Lumad and a member of the SOS Network shared the different struggles and threats to human rights they have been facing for the past several years. She expressed the challenges her community has endured under the previous and present administrations while emphasizing the importance of demanding justice and accountability.

The participants also took part in the bead craft-making session led by the Lumad guests. Each one was able to create their accessories with every color combination having its meaning and significance. The conference room was filled with contagious joy and curiosity as every participant tried to finish their artwork. In the end, the organizers thanked and reminded everyone to continue fighting alongside the IP communities and never stop advocating for human rights.

This ACP is one of the many events the Katutubo Desk has lined up for this month. ACP is an annual program of the Ateneo Law School Student Council to give students alternative modes of learning beyond the usual law school setup. ALS students participated in various activities right after their midterm examination.
